Where to Buy Essential Oils?

topic posted Sat, May 19, 2007 - 2:49 PM by  KJ
Hello Everyone,
There are 3 stores i'm thinking of ordering from:

1. www.newdirectionsaromatics.com
2. www.mountainroseherbs.com
3. libertynatural.com

Any reviews about them?your faves from these suppliers?quality of oils?service?which EO not to buy from them due to low/weak aroma odor or other reasons ?any other stores with good prices and quality?
organic vs wildcrafted vs cultivated?do they have GCMS results ?
I hope they are not made from low quality crops and haven't been sitting on their shelves for years
Thank you any advice will help

I just placed an order from New Directions last week. Never ordered from them before but the price was right and they seem to have good reviews. I also placed an order with www.edenbotanicals.com. I've only ordered their amber resins and was so impressed that I decided to get some of their essential oils as well.

I loooovvvee Starchild. I got some resin incense and massage oils in Glastonbury years ago, do you know where you can buy them in the states? Or do you have to order them online and pay to have them shipped here. Thanks so much for posting that as I've been trying to find them here, I love their astrological sign potions. thanks again!

          Hi,

I just learned about oud a short while ago myself.

It's a very old fragrance, sometimes called aloeswood or agarwood, and is orginally from the far east, such as Assam in India, Borneo, Viet Nam, and a few other places. People often describe it as having the smell of freshly tanned leather, or simply unforgettable. There's a lot of lore about it...

I haven't smelled it yet, but I ordered a small sample from Eden Botanicals. This is one of those amazing things about the interenet, since it's very expensive and somewhat rare.

          link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agarwood

I just bought a few samples from Eden and I was very happy with all of them -- they even included a gift of patchouli, which I didn't think I wanted, but it was completely different from the sort of thing you smell in head shops!

Their Oud reminded me of building a new house, how the fresh wood smells when they're sawing it... but amplified.

The frankincense was very green-smelling, but it mixed nicely with a bit of amber.

I also got some Cepes, which is a fungal fragrance -- green and musky -- I'm looking forward to mixing it.

The last thing I got was cardamom, which was as you might expect. Looking forward to mixing that one as well.

Their line seems very distincive, but it's very affordable to order samples, so I suggest doing that when selecting.

I bought my amber at Whole Foods - the maker was Kuumba Made, they are also online (see one of my links above.) I think that amber would make a nice compliment to anything green, including some of the more medicinal-smelling essentials. (I need to get a decent recipe book!)

Kuumba Made also had a really nice white ginger, but they were out of it at Whole Foods, so that one I may buy online. It was somewhat like a jasmine, but lighter, and maybe a tiny bit greener. Sometimes jasmines seem a bit musky or woody for me.

I've order from all three...New directions I heard from others that they like them, I was unimpressed. I ordered pomegranate essential oil (which is pretty rare) and it turned out to be pressed pomegranate oil (wasn't even that good of quality), could have been a one time mislabeling...but I haven't reorderd from them since.
mountain rose herbs always has great stuff, I think they have pretty high standards but can be a little pricey. If I remember correctly, they are pretty specific as to wether they are cultivated or wildcrafted and have lots of organic choices.
Liberty natural has the best selection, service and prices I've found, most everything I've gotten has been good quality, but it's a little dicey ....I think when it comes to them, you get what you pay for, if you go for the cheapest of the choices, you get less quality...etc. they have certificates of analysis on some oils but not all and some organic choices. Overall I like their products as they have good bulk prices and choices. They don't have online ordering so you have to call your order in.
    If your just buying an ounce or so I might go with Mountain Rose as they consistently have high quality, you can order anytime- lots of organic choices and I think they list if they are wildcrafted or not (last time I checked)....hope this helps and have fun ;^}

      these are great leads, thanks!

i used to buy from brain garden (i met dr. penoel and attended a lecture in los cabos a couple years ago -- a true essential oil guru from france -- wrote many books -- highest quality ever - however, brain garden has since merged with another company and it's not easy to make my connection anymore)

it has been recommended to use young oils, however, i have declined because i am not impressed with their company leaders and many of their distributors

so i purchased from nature's sunshine, and they're okay, but not the high quality of brain garden

i bought from a place called IAmShaman, and while they have wonderful other stuff, the oil i bought bleached out, burned and otherwise discolored my pink ceramic angel oil holder, so you know it had to have lotsa alcohol in it

also, the brand "now" at many local health food stores is extremely low quality and cut with everything, actually caused me such extreme breathing difficulty i had to hit the nebulizer for relief

i make my own household sprays and perfume misters (sometimes i use 100 proof vodka to preserve, works wonderful!)

i am extremely sensitive to chemicals and so i am always always on the lookout for highest quality and the best (of anything, for that matter)

sometimes i buy windmere from my local metaphysical bookstore and food co-op, they're okay, but i'm always looking -- trying to get back to the quality of brain garden

      so thanks again

    Hi Sweetie!

In my experience, Liberty Natural is the best deal for large quantities of standard oils like lavendar, etc. I like their rose, jasmine, etc. It's a fun site to order from because of the vast selection and choice of quantities. It's also a good idea to go in with others on orders, because the prices go down significantly with increased volume.

I haven't personally experienced the oils from Floracopeia, but David Crow has an excellent reputation for integrity and I really get the sense that he and his colleagues care deeply about the quality of their sources - they are very knowledgeable about Aromatherapy, from what I gather.

I'd love to go in on an order of vanilla, pink grapefruit, rose, and lavender, if anyone's interested. Also, I have a bunch of oils that I'm not using that I'd love to trade, if you want to get together sometime soon.

As for quality, it's safe to order larger amounts of oils that hold their quality over time, and I recommend ordering more of the ones that really mature with age, like the base notes - they will age nicely over time. But don't order more than you need of citrus notes, like pink grapefruit - it's a waste of money, because they lose potency much more quickly.

There's a guy in Mill Valley selling oils out of his garage, and I've got some great stuff from him for such an awesome deal. I'll try to find his number.

    Love you!

After years and years of buying online and elsewhere, I would agree that Liberty Natural is a great all around resource. Also, I feel that I would rather spend my dollars with someone who is honest and very helpful over the phone when needed. I am planning a field trip to Nevada City in the next few months and will go to the Floracopeia store and try to make a report back. David Crow is an impressive writer and I would have to assume that his oils are very special and worth the extra expense.

i have to agree that the floracopeia oils are the highest quality i've ever seen...and i love how they do the more rare oils that are hard to find. they have an agarwood which will take you to another world. i've seen david crow speak and he is quite a powerful storyteller, visionary and powerhouse of inspiration. you can order from them directly or you can also get them at Sahaj-Herbal Apothecary in Berkeley. Sahaj is an amazing roots old-world apothecary with an extensive selection of Ayurvedic, Chinese and Western herbs, luxurious organic herbal bodycare, organic teas, books, etc.

        Blessed love

i just ordered a few different oils from floricopeia and i think their products are really high quality but they just aren't too my taste, i would describe them all; neroli-pettigrain, gingergrass, orris/violet etc as very "green". does anyone have a good source for a synthetic or natural violet, btw?
    • Re: Where to Buy Essential Oils?

      Thu, August 16, 2007 - 1:08 PM
I love violet and have searched for years, but there is no natural violet flower absolute available (years ago they made it but it was insanely expensive), Violet leaf absolute is available (from places like liberty natural) but it smells intensely green with a suble floral nuance on the drydown.
Synthetics are tricky because people have different preferences as to what is "good" but there are a number of products based on ionones that smell like violet flowers. Some are more powdery and candylike and some are more green, some more floral. CB I Hate Perfume in Brooklyn has a very true violet avaiable and I believe you can order smaller sizes to try out online.

I love violet as well. Frontier herbs (I think that was the company) used to make a violet perfume that smelled nice, but they don't make it anymore, I don't believe. I don't think it was natural either, but it sure smelled nice! I think I'll have to try that I Hate Perfume variety...

    Hi everyone,

    I thoroughly recommend these guys:
    www.ahimsaoils.com.au

They are based in Australia and sell wholesale, the prices are great...they don't advertise...it is only through word of mouth that people know them...aromatherapists get their stash from them...the quality is exquisite...and the price is really good.

    I've just bought some oils...including blue lotus....wonderful...
    • Re: Where to Buy Essential Oils?

      Wed, April 16, 2008 - 12:51 PM
Looks like they may have some OK prices for the enthusiast, but they don't seem very technical. There are lots of different types of frankincense, petitgrains and lavenders for ex., and they don't specify what they have, they just have one generic label for each. Not to mention exotic oils like Oud, which are notoriously faked, and that site doesn't mention at all what the provenance is for theirs.

If you just want to enjoy some nice oils, they're probably fine, but there are a number of more exacting vendors around, in case you are interested in more serious blending, etc.

        Hi Jewel,

Aromatics International www.aromaticsinternational.com has downloadable reports of the exact chemical makeup of each oil. They also use the common and scientific names.

(For example she sells for different Helichrysum essential oils.)

I can't recommend this site highly enough. The oils are definitely geared more toward a true enthusiast or clinical practitioner than your average dabbler.

That sounds amazing! I will check them out!

But also - I am all for cheaper oils, they have some sweet uses too. I was buying some yummy Mychelle face potions at the food co-op today, but I skipped their C-serum when I noticed their C-sources were tangerine and grapefruit oils. I love Mychelle, but I saved $40 when I realized I already had those oils & could just add a 15% mix of these into my other moisturizers :P

Then I bought a pure chamomile extract for $11 - same idea. Making a 12% solution, that bottle will go far!

I would still use the higher end, pedigreed oils for ultimate scent-making. I just keep an open mind for the cheaper oils too, where they fit. :P

          PS - yay dabblers!

All of Flroracopeai's oils are either organic, wild crafted, and brought in directly from small artisan distillery's, as opposed to the big world market where quality control is an issue. Thats the problem with getting essential oils from places like Whole Foods. Perhaps they have some ok oils there but I would definitely do my research before buying. The thing about Floracopeia is that not only are they committed to high quality oils, they also are active supporting reforestation and sustainable methods of cultivating and distilling the herbs.
Check out their project pages on their website.

Yes, I would agree, the specialty vendors are definitely the better option when scent-crafting.

However, places like Whole Foods are great in a pinch, when you need something basic. For ex., I needed to exterminate for moths recently, and the NOW lavender and rosemary oils they had were perfect for the job - and cheap!

My wool rugs were grateful :D

Greetings all, I am new to Aromatherapy. I am looking to become certified to add to my massage skills. My wife is already well schooled in the use of essential oils and we purchase from Aura Cacia. <www.auracacia.com> They have a good selection and the quality is quite good with assured 100%.

I thank all the repliers for some of there sites to check out, I may develop some new suppliers. We use quite a lot of essential oils in our practice, with an increasing market for their benifits. Our biggest seller is my wifes headache recipe in a jojoba base.
