Re: making essential oils...?
Wed, October 3, 2007 - 10:07 AMMy advice is that you invest in taking a class first.
Distilling requires fairly expensive equipment and access to a good amount of plant material, and it would be helpful if you have had basic chem lab experience. Some plants, like peppermint, are really easy but others have technically tricky distillations .
Jeanne Rose has distilling weekend seminars, and probably other folks too.
Hope I don't discourage you, but it helps to have a realistic picture of the work involved which can be quite fun if you are a true herb nerd.

Re: making essential oils...?
Fri, December 14, 2007 - 11:23 AMIf you want to try the homemade way, get a large stainless steel pot and one of those stainless fold-out "baskets" that fit the inside (used for steaming veggies and stuff). Place some distilled water on the bottom - don't have it rise above the basket level. Place the basket and fill to the top the plant matter (rose petals, or whatever you have) and set on very low heat. On the top, flip the lid over if you have to and fill it with a bag of ice. When the steam rises through the plant matter, it hits the top, condenses and falls back through and does this over and over again.
When all of the oils are into the water, place the water in the longest, skinniest thing you have. The oil will float to the top, and you can get one of those glass droppers and "suck" off the oil to place in small bottles. Then use the water leftover as a floral water, i.e. sprays. Good luck!
