Hey all,

While I've always had an interest in Aromatherapy and Perfumery, Jitterbug Perfume really opened my eyes to the power of scent. Since then, I've realized more and more how effected by scent I am. Now I'm ready to start experimenting with essential oils etc, but I am not quite sure where to begin. I have been trying to find a good "beginner's kit" or something of the sort, but I am really at a loss. Not sure what I should be looking for. Any tips? I would be most grateful.

Thanks!

whenever i discover a new tribe
    i just dive in
    read everything anyone posted
and get answers to lotsa stuff
and even to questions i didn't know i had

    i would start here
with the threads on buying oils, high quality oils
and any other topic that strikes your fancy

another idea is to go to a head shop
or metaphysical-type book store or crystal shop
or even a natural foods store
    and dabble in the testers
i do that ALL THE TIME

    welcome, kasey!

My advice would be to visit a good bookstore or library where you can check out a range of aromatherapy books and get a couple to spend a bit of time with.
Then, find a store that has a wide variety of oils that you can smell.
Smell them all...and pick a few that you like quite a bit to purchase.
Get familiar with these oils and their properties.
As your passion for aromatherapy gets ahold of you..and you are lured by other oils. ..you can simulatenously learn about them in depth as you build your "tool box".
    Dive in!

Anybody know how to set up a chemistry lab for making perfume in their home without the cops thinking you're making Meth? I have wanted to do this for a while but I don't really know how to go about it. Any suggestions?

What kind of chemistry are you going to be doing? If you are just blending oils, absolutes, concretes, etc in carrier oils or alcohol, then all you need is a few small beakers, maybe some spatulas, pipets, vials, droppers etc. If you are going to be doing steam distillation or extraction to prepare these materials, then you will need standard organic chemistry glassware such as round bottom flasks, stillheads, fractioning columns, condensers etc. also for extractions, large separatory funnels are useful. Two major manufacturers of glassware are Ace Glass and Chemglass.

I reccomend buying one or two oils that you are drawn to and then pick one of them and spend time smelling it one and off at different times of the day- also make a sacred an quiet space and meditate w/ the oil. ~ keep a journal and write down any emotions, thoughts or inspirations that come up. Plants teach us uniquely at the level we are available to learn. Connect to he soul of the plant and dialouge w/ it- really get to know them one or 2 at a time. Books can be great reference and guides, but there is none better than your own innate wisdom and intiution.
In time you will know a plant as you would a close friend. And in time you can play around w/ mixing your own custom scent... hours of fun!!!

I already work with oils and aromatherapy but I want to start extracting and distilling. I can get my hands on the glassware, I just don't know if you need to have a special license to do that kind of stuff. I mean, distillation was illegal I thought, or is that only with alcohol? I guess I would have to google some laws on distillation to get the specifics. Unless anybody already knows.

good questions. distilling as such is not illegal, but you may need some kind of permit from the BATF to distill ethanol (ie everclear or the azeotrope of approx 95% EtOH and 5% water). but as far as steam distillation for preparing essential oils, that should be fine. i did that several times in undergrad organic lab. and i can't see why extracting plant material (absolutes and concretes) would require a special license.
