      ms eden,
You might have some trouble with that - finding a violet scent. I've talked to someone who's told me that the scent is not easy to obtain (the volatile oil) and because the REALLY strong smelling flowers are usually wild, that makes it even more difficult to capture. I don't know if it is easy or difficult to make a synthetic version. If I find an online source, I'll pass along the link.

I found one once, but it was about $110 dollars for about 1/8. I wish I could remember where it was at to point ya in some sort of direction! I just remember going - hmmm that's too expensive for me!

Maybe it was Quelques Violettes by Houbigant??? It's difficult to find and it's expensive. I can only find Quelques Fleurs at Nieman Marcus (it's really pretty) but it costs about $170.00 for 3.3 oz, so Violettes would probably be around the same I'd guess. Anyway, as far as commercial scents go, Quelques Fleurs is the only one I really like :) (by the way, there are other sites around where you can purchase it cheaper, you just need to watch how old it might be).

I love violet. But let me tell you the sad tale of my quest. There is no violet flower absolute. None. Not since the 19th century when ionone was synthesized, one of the very first synthetic florals. It is just too expensive to harvest all those tiny little flowers which do not produce much apparently. Maybe one of the very special Grasse perfume houses has a tiny little stash of it somewhere but we will never see it, alas. However, you can get a very nice violet LEAF absolute which has a lovely green cucumber, fading to soft violet scent. Or try orris butter which has a woody violet scent.
Meanwhile, back to the synthetics... Bedoues makes a fairly nice Violette de Toulouse which has a traditional parma violet fragrance. Borsari Violetta di Parma is also nice though much greener. I used to grow violets so I can say that none of these perfumes really captures the depth of the true flower but they are suggestive of violets.

unfortunately this is quite true. no true, natural violet oil.

Any luck trying to find the violet "flower" oil? As I've been on this search for a while also with nothing comming available.

I'd also like to know if anyone can tell me the properties etc behind the flower ( anything spiritual, magical?) and not the leaf as you really can't compare the two

I love the perfume Violetta di Parma by Borsari...you can find it on the net at several American discount perfume suppliers. For example 1stperfume.com usually has a 1.7oz EDP for $39-99 which is about half the regular price.

I stick with Yardley's April Violets. It has a sweet and natural smell to it- not at all musky. I have used perfume oils before, and they have an almost bitter smell to them.

I love violet, but natural violet essential oil, forget it! I grow them at home, they smell wonderful. You want the oil, move to Grasse and cultivate connections.

As for violet perfumes, besides the one's mentioned, here are a few from my collection:

Violet Angel - Thiery Mugler (violet and patchouli, very modern)
N'aimez que Moi - Caron (violet, rose and vanilla, made for WW1 soldiers to give to their sweethearts)
Violette Precieuse - Caron (a violet for Colette, green but a bit soapy for me)
Bois de Violette - Serge Lutens (wood and violets, only available in Paris)
Lipstick Rose - Editions Malle (violet and rose, intense)
Lolita Lempicka - Lolita Lempicka (anise and violet leaves, very sweet)
