Re: lilac perfume
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 4:28 PMNow, correct me if I'm wrong ('cause, when it comes to EOs I hate to be misinformed!), but...I do not believe there is a "Lilac E.O.", probably because there is no market for it. Now, this is a shame, because lilac is my FAVOURITE flower!!! Be that as it may, a very reputiple dealer I often give my business [Isis Books & Gifts in Denver, Colo.] sells what they claim is authentic Lilac E.O.-- they sell both blue and white lilac oils. So, I don't know if it's the real stuff or not... But, because of my curiousity, I'd like to know who they get these from, so I might enquire of them as to their authenticity. They also claim their Musk Oil (both light and dark?!), as well as a civit and ambergris oils are authentic, rather than perfume fragrances. So...I dunno'... *shrugs* Anyone know more about the oils sold by this business? -

Re: lilac perfume
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 5:54 PMI will not comment on this business because they may honestly believe it is real. But they are so very very wrong.
OK. Lilac.... even 80 or 100 years ago there was no lilac essential oil or absolute. it all comes from terpineol which smells remarkably like lilac, though really good reproductions would probably contain blends of real florals like ylang ylang, jasmine and tuberose... but no real lilac.
Ambergris is insanely expensive. I have some I had shipped from Italy. So unless you dropped a few hundred bucks that is a no. However, there are some really really great synthetics so don't feel bad. Musk is not legal, though I have smelled the real thing (from Italy) and you can sometimes find the musk grains in Chinatown but again... fake.
Civit is virtually all synthetic, though the real stuff is available but due to protests from US groups no one will usually sell it. But it is theoretically real, but in most cases... no.
I only know these obscure things because I know a number of professional perfumers and have visited them at their labs, and I used to have a few huge lilac bushes and have sincerely wished I could get the real thing too. -

Re: lilac perfume
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 11:34 AMSo...how much does real Italian musk oil go for? *sigh* It's too bad that Musk Ambrette Oil is so expensive! I hear it smells remarkibly like real Musk Oil!
By the way, have you ever heard oif "musk crystals"? A few British Witches [such as Janet & Stewart Farrar, and others] have published incense formulas that call for this ingredient. Now, I've googled it, but came up empty handed; I don't even know what this stuff is, or what it's supposed to be. Ya' know what I mean? *shrugs* -

Re: lilac perfume
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 10:33 PMthose are probably musk ketone crystals.
Secret hint! if you google hunting catalogs under animal lures you will find they sell synthetic musk ketone because animals are drawn to it.
It is cheap because the older nitro musks have mostly been banned from human fragrances due to sensitivity concerns.
Actually it is very interesting to read the hunting catalogs to find out what sort of smells animals like especially if you are doing any sort of shamanistic animal based things. -

Re: lilac perfume
Sat, August 25, 2007 - 10:52 AMI just googled "scent lure" and a bunch of hunting sites popped up. The information as to what scents different animals like was definitely worth reading about.
If you are looking for an animal scent that is available and cruelty free I would suggest Africa Stone tincture. I know that Mandy Aftels webstore carries it. It comes from the rock hyrax and is an ancient product used by certain African tribes. They collect the rocks that the hyrax soak with urine and excreta and they soak them. The smell is much like civet. No critters are hurt! -
