I don't know if any of you are fans of Tom Robbins and have read THE best book of all time, Jitterbug Perfume, but I need your help.....

I am re-reading the book, and I have endeavored to actually try to make the perfume. It calls for
Lemon Citron
Jasmine
Ambergris
Extract of beet pollen

I have lemon essential oil and jasmine, but can anyone recommend a good source for ambergris and what in the world would you use for extract of beet pollen (yes, BEET, as in the vegetable)????

Any suggestions are GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thank you!!

I just bought myself a copy of the book at a book sale...hmmm not sure I would use ambregris tho as its from whales...and I do not support using any of the products that come from killing such magnificent creatures esp for something like this...this is not personal to you...

indeed all ambergris is synthetic these days. way back when a good deal of it was collected on beaches. this was the preferred methood of aquiring it because it was considered much higher quality than taken from a whale that was killed. the aging process was thought to refine it.

Actually, yes, there is real ambergris out there. Try www.profumo.it for the online store in Italy. According to their site they provide documentation that the ambergris is free floating and "ethical" and there are no restrictions from CITES about trading in it. This means that it is not taken from a killed whale, but has been found after floating around for years on the ocean.
I have to admit that I am on my second bottle of it. It is hideously expensive but has a supernaturally strange scent that amplifies other accords, and adds a shifting texture of salt, milk, tobacco, seaweed and other undefinable weird notes. I have smelled some very nice synthetics but they don't come close to this complexity.
Nonetheless, I generally feel that one should stick to synthetics for the animal notes.

One of my all time favorite books! I created my own "Jitterbug Perfume" once. I used Jasmine, Neroli and tried patchouli for the muskiness of beet pollen. I can't say how true it is to Tom's vision but it was a heavenly scent that felt like love enveloping my senses. I met Tom at a Spa where I gave his wife a Massage as part of his Birthday outing. He was a really sweet and personable guy and so excited about his birthday surprise like a little boy!

    do beet plants flower first?
    collect the pollen
make a solution and create extract.
    hmmm.......beet pollen.

A friend of mine knows someone in Boston who will make a fragrance out of ANYTHING. And he had k-23 made. By the way, it smells utterly divine.

Yes, please tell. I'd much rather buy it from your friend than try to reinvent the wheel

I have not given up! Infact, I have decided that I am going to make it for myself for my birthday. So, can anyone suggest the best place for jasmine?
I'm talking top of the line, bingo pajama jasmine
and top of the line lemon citron

i think I may have found someone to supply the beet pollen. There is a woman in Ireland (I think) who is doing research on beet pollen and I sent her an email requesting to buy her samples once her research is done. I am hoping and praying she answers my email.

I don't know why I am such a purist. I'm sure I could probably substitute something else earthy for the beet pollen, but I feel like I would be missing out. It was, afterall, the whole backbone of the storyline.

I forgot to mention that I was in Seattle a few months ago, and because I really am a major Tom Robbins fan, I tracked him down to his home in LaConner.
When you first enter the town, there is a HUGE BEET FIELD!!!!!!

I bought some and they were the best damn beets I've ever eaten, plus they were absolutely gorgeous. Seriously. They were orange and yellow and all shades of red.

someone get on a beet pollen extract. making a concrete out of it with ether would probably get the real odor out. Hand down, i think for Jasmin, and all the rarest and finest of flowers- Robertet. They even have pure oils of chantrelle mushrooms and brandy, and honey!

well crud, you know, i never ordered things online, let me look thru my crud to see if i can find contact. I beleive the united states representative is out of new jersey. They are usually listed (or was, they are over 250 year old company) in the perfume trade catalogues. But let me see if i can track em down. its been 15 years since i looked for those invoices.

Travis, you forget that you were buying Robertet for a business. As far as I can tell they will only provide samples or products to businesses with a wholesale license. Sad. But, I have found that Eden Botanicals has some incredibly good perfumery quality obscure absolutes that one can buy in small quantities.

I ALSO TRIED MY LUCK AT JITTERBUG PERFUME.
I SMELLED HIS WORDS AND WENT TO WORK.
I USED GRAPEFRUIT AS MY TOP NOTE AND PATCHOULI AS THE BOTTOM ONE.
AS FAR AS I REMEMBER, THERE WAS NO AMBERGIS IN JITTERBUG PERFUME,
ALTHOUGH IF YOU WANT THAT, TRY OPOPANAX OR OAKMOSS ABSOLUTE, BUT ONLY A LITTLE, AS THEY ARE BOTH RESINS AND ARE QUITE THE BOSS OF ANY MIX.
HE DESCRIBED THE BEET POLLEN SMELL, AND IT REMINDED ME MOST OF WHAT PATCHOULI DOES TO ANY MIX IF YOU DONT USE TOO MUCH.
TANGERINE IS ANOTHER POSSIBLE TOP NOTE.
    HAVE FUN!

Petite, is this person actually making multiple Pan bottles, or is this just a special project? Also, was your perfumer friend successful in collecting the necessary beet pollen?

I am so glad I came upon this thread. I am mystified as to why no company has stepped forward to manufacture this famed scent.
